Maker's Mark 101

In previous years, Maker's Mark 101 was only available in two places. This particular bottle was only available for those visiting the distillery and those traveling internationally. Recently, Maker's Mark decided to distribute Maker's Mark 101 as a limited release. One of the things that always amazes me about whiskey, is how you can slightly change one part of the process, and it can result in something else entirely. I believe the increase in proof of "regular" Maker's Mark (90 proof), did exactly that.
The nose begins with a cinnamon spice note which is followed by a fruit sweetness. To me this smells as if someone were in the kitchen baking a cherry pie or cherry dessert. The nose ends with a note reminiscent of syrup. The cherry pie that I got on the nose comes through on the palate. Imagine it being the end of a slice where you would get flavor from the crust as well. The higher proof adds more flavor but remain approachable. The finish is medium in length with a mix of savory notes and maple syrup.
I really enjoy this whiskey at 101 proof. I wish this was readily available all of the time, as I think this could really compete in today's bourbon market. I believe the increase in proof would give bourbon enthusiasts more flavor, but would also remain approachable for those who are new to bourbon. With this being a limited release, I would definitely suggest adding this bottle to your collection. Cheers!
