Elijah Craig Barrel Proof (Batch B522)
Age Statement: 12 Years
Some reviewers have been low on recent Elijah Craig Barrel Proof releases. Many feel that the batches of the past are far superior to today’s product. This is not the only bottle that I’ve heard this thought. However this particular batch, I might disagree.
On the nose, I get a sweet oak smell that is inviting. Rich brown sugar and caramel are also present. In my opinion, the nose is much more pleasant than the previous A122 batch.
The nose isn’t the only thing that’s more pleasant. On the palate, I get those baking spices, leather, oak, brown sugar and caramel. I really struggled with the previous batch but this one has way more complexity in my opinion. This batch seems to hold all of those notes on the mid-palate, which allows it to be more approachable but may turn some away. If you like the batches that punch you in the mouth, this one might not be for you.
As always, you should try this for yourself. If you find this bottle at retail, I would suggest purchasing if you are familiar with higher proof bourbons. Even though this one is 121 proof, it doesn’t really drink hot. This one, in my opinion, is the easiest sipping ECBP release in awhile. Now we will have to wait and see what C922 is all about. Cheers!
